You cannot receive a federal contract award without an active SAM.gov registration. The process takes about 45–90 minutes and 3–10 business days to activate. Here is every step.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

  1. Create a login.gov account and complete identity proofing with a government-issued ID
  2. Navigate to sam.gov → Get Started → Register Your Entity → Start a New Registration
  3. Complete Core Data: legal name (must match IRS records exactly), address, EIN, business type
  4. Complete Assertions: NAICS codes, size standards, and set-aside certifications
  5. Complete Representations & Certifications: business certifications and FAR compliance representations
  6. Set up EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer): bank routing and account numbers — required for payment
  7. Submit registration and wait 3–10 business days for activation confirmation
  8. Set a calendar reminder 30 days before the 12-month expiration date to renew

What you need before you start

Gather these before opening the browser or you will get stuck mid-application.

  • EIN and legal name exactly as they appear on your IRS CP-575 letter
  • Physical business address (cannot be a PO Box for principal office)
  • Bank routing and account numbers for EFT setup
  • NAICS codes (research at naics.com or census.gov/naics first)
  • login.gov account — create at login.gov with a work email

Common reasons registrations get stuck

Most delays trace to one of three issues. Know them in advance so you can fix them quickly.

  • IRS name mismatch: your SAM.gov legal name does not match the IRS TIN database exactly — check your CP-575 letter
  • CAGE code delay: first-time registrants without prior federal activity take longer for CAGE assignment
  • EFT banking error: ABA routing number entered incorrectly — double-check with your bank
  • Incomplete Reps & Certs: left blank or submitted incomplete certifications
